BANGA 17 APRIL : On April 17th, a glorious celebration of Guru Nanak Mission Hospital 40 years of service was held at
Dhahan Kaleran. The entrance to the compass of Guru Nanak Mission Medical & Educational Trust was a
visual delight with two rows of photographs marking various milestones from the beginning in 1984 to
the present. Under the shade of bright colored tent canopies, a large audience of friends and
supporters, staff, NRIs and distinguished guests enjoyed a lively program. Presentations included a
documentary telling Baba Budh Singh's inspiring story and the 40-year history of the Hospital, and a
heartwarming song photographic journey with music, and a heartwarming song.
S. Kulvinder S. Dhahan, President, welcomed the guests and related his personal connection with Guru
Nanak Mission Hospital when Baba Budh Singh Ji came in 1979 from Canada and shared his dream of
building a hospital and medical college. Distinguished speakers Dr. Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, MLA,
Banga and Dr. Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Past Chairperson, Punjab School Board of Education spoke about
the positive impact of the Hospital on the health of the local population, employment and economic
opportunities for many, and the life transforming nursing education for young women.
Dr. Mahil Singh, Principal, Khalsa College, Amritsar highlighted the impressive contributions of Guru
Nanak Mission to education specifically in pioneering nursing education programs in Punjab. He said,
"that a life of serving especially through education and health care is the greatest service one can do".
Canadian Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Stewart Wheeler stated, "It is extremely heartening to know
that the hospital was established by the visionary philanthropist S. Budh S. Dhahan." Innovative
collaborations in education such as the one in nursing is the key to sharing of knowledge and its further
development and progress." He went on to say that "Canada is a global leader and champion for
advancing gender equality, human rights, and the empowerment of women and girls. I am very happy to
note that most graduates from the Guru Nanak College of Nursing are young women who have acquired
the skills that will empower them economically and this help them make their own choices in life."
Chief Guest S. Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Speaker of Punjab Assembly said, "I am especially pleased to
speak with students in this celebration and believe this organization is helping to develop the rich talent
of our young people."
S. Barjinder S. Dhahan (son of S. Baba Budh Singh Ji) , Vice- President gave thanks to everyone from
around the world who have contributed in different ways to the missionary work of Guru Nanak Mission
Hospital and related Guru Nanak College of Nursing and Guru Nanak Public Senior Secondary School. He
challenged the audience to imagine what the next 40 years will be. He announced funding commitments
of 8 crore Indian rupees ($ 1.33 million Canadian) from Canadian donors for future expansion of hospital
and educational services including a medical college. He thanked S. Mohinder Pal Singh and Simarpreet
Kaur and their family for the donation of new ambulance to the Hospital.
